That, I think, is why we should all give our computers a good wipe.
I can’t help but think about the video game Grand Theft Auto V. It’s an open-world action game that really lets you control your entire character’s life from the get-go. I don’t know if we’ve given our computers a good wipe from the video games our parents played when they were kids, but I hope we have, because playing in the dark with a flashlight is a bit creepy.
I personally do not consider myself to be a “person with self-awareness.” But I am a “person with self-awareness” in the sense that I have awareness of my own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions. I am aware that I am not on autopilot. I am aware that I am not just sitting in front of a computer, and I am aware that I have a choice to make in how I react to the world.
That choice is in not getting distracted or distracted by a bad video game or a friend’s social media posts when we’re supposed to be engaged with something else. We’re not on autopilot. That’s a choice. That’s also self-awareness.
The problem is that if you are not on autopilot, your awareness of your own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions will always be less than perfect. That’s because your habits, routines, impulses, and reactions are always part of a web of connections and interactions that allow you to feel you’re in charge of your life but really are just a collection of small habits, routines, impulses and reactions.
